Online therapy

There are many reasons why an individual may be unable or unwilling to travel for an in-person therapy session. If you are already in therapy or if you need professional emotional support, online therapy sessions or telehealth can provide the care that you need.

Christina Winkler offers accessible online therapy appointments. You can book online appointments for the time that works for you. Get in touch to find out more about your options.

Online therapy refers to sessions offered over the internet. Clients speak to Christina from the comfort of their own home, office or other remote location. Online counseling facilitates getting help in a confidential and convenient manner.

To book an appointment, send Christina a message through the contact form or call on the phone.

The benefits of online therapy

Online appointments may meet your needs if you:

  • Do not have the time to get to and from our office
  • Are located too far for face to face visits
  • Are unable or unwilling to visit the therapist’s office for any reason
  • Need to schedule sessions at a time when face to face appointments are not feasible
  • Find it is difficult to get to our office because of any constraint

Many people find that, as well as being more convenient, online therapy helps them to feel more comfortable, allowing them to open up and really explore their issues. Being able to fit therapy more easily into your busy schedule, makes it easier to feel at ease and dump the stress that gets in the way of effective therapy. If you have tried therapy before without success, online therapy may be the option you are looking for.

Online appointments require that you have a reliable internet connection.

Online appointments are not suited to address all psychological concerns, and should not be used as a form of crisis intervention. In particular, online therapy is not appropriate for people with thoughts of suicide or homicide. If you are having these thoughts, call a suicide hotline immediately.

How do online therapy sessions work?

In advance of your session, we will send you instructions for clicking in or dialing into the session. Ideally, you will use a smartphone or a computer with a camera so that we can get the full experience of meeting, including facial expressions and body language.

What tips do you have for making online sessions work?

When you come to the office for psychotherapy, you expect an environment that is quiet, private, and professional. This is true for online therapy sessions as much as for in-person sessions! Prepare yourself with a working headset (if you will be calling via computer) and a quiet room.

For best results:

  • Make sure the room is well-lit. (A window in front of you might cast a shadow or create low visibility.)
  • If possible, to improve eye contact, position your camera so that it’s easy to look at the camera and at the screen.

Will my insurance cover online sessions (behavioral telehealth)?

Insurance coverage for behavioral telehealth is changing rapidly. Check with your insurance company or the HR department at your employer. If you have been delaying checking this out, now is the time! Many companies provide answers on their websites, but you may need to call in to get clarification.

Will my insurance company reimburse me for an out-of-network online therapy session?

Check with your insurance company or the HR department at your employer. You can review the website of your insurance company (look for “behavioral telehealth coverage” or similar wording).
